Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka Pass – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate
Departing from Marrakech, the journey begins with a scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at an altitude of 2,260 meters. Along the way, there will be opportunities to stop for panoramic views of the winding mountain roads and Berber villages nestled on the slopes. Upon arrival at Ait Ben Haddou, a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site, explore its maze-like alleys and ancient mud-brick structures, which have served as a backdrop for many famous films. After lunch, continue to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, where you will visit the impressive Kasbah Taourirt, once a residence of the powerful Glaoui family. The day ends with a relaxing evening at a riad in Ouarzazate.
Day 2: Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Agdz – Zagora
Leaving Ouarzazate, the route takes you through the Draa Valley, known for its lush palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Passing through Agdz, a charming oasis town, the journey continues along the winding roads lined with traditional mudbrick villages. A visit to the Kasbah of Tamnougalt, an ancient fortress that once controlled caravan trade routes, offers insight into the region’s rich history. By late afternoon, arrival in Zagora, a peaceful desert town, allows for an evening of relaxation under the palm trees, enjoying the quiet ambiance of the southern Moroccan landscape.
Day 3: Zagora – Tamegroute – M’hamid – Erg Chegaga Desert
The morning begins with a visit to Tamegroute, a village famous for its centuries-old underground kasbah and distinctive green pottery workshops. Continuing towards M’hamid, the last town before the vast Sahara begins, the landscape transforms into endless stretches of golden sand. From here, a camel caravan awaits to take you deep into the dunes of Erg Chegaga, one of the most remote and beautiful desert regions in Morocco. As the sun sets over the dunes, arrive at a desert camp, where a traditional Berber dinner is served under the starlit sky. Enjoy an evening around the campfire, listening to Gnawa music played by local nomads.
Day 4: Erg Chegaga – Iriki Lake – Foum Zguid – Agdz
After a magical sunrise over the dunes, the journey continues through the vast desert landscapes towards Iriki Lake, a seasonal salt flat that once served as a route for nomadic tribes. Traveling across the rocky plains, pass through Foum Zguid, a small desert town where the first glimpses of civilization reappear. After lunch, return to Agdz, where the afternoon is spent exploring more of the Draa Valley, famous for its dense palm groves and hidden kasbahs. A comfortable stay in a traditional guesthouse provides a perfect place to unwind.
Day 5: Agdz – Nkob – Todra Gorge
Leaving the Draa Valley behind, the route winds through the volcanic landscapes of Nkob, a small village known for its numerous kasbahs. The journey continues through the rugged terrain of Tinghir, a picturesque oasis town surrounded by palm trees and lush gardens. Arriving at Todra Gorge, a breathtaking canyon with towering cliffs reaching 300 meters high, there is time to explore the dramatic rock formations and walk along the riverbed. The night is spent in a charming guesthouse at the foot of the gorge, where the peaceful atmosphere allows for a restful evening.
Day 6: Todra Gorge – Dades Valley – Skoura
After breakfast, depart for the Dades Valley, where the road winds through a series of striking rock formations known as the “Monkey Fingers.” Along the way, small Berber villages and terraced fields line the valley, providing stunning photo opportunities. A stop at a panoramic viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the Dades Gorges before continuing towards Skoura, an oasis town famous for its Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. The afternoon is spent exploring the Amridil Kasbah, one of the most well-preserved fortresses in Morocco, offering a glimpse into traditional Saharan architecture.
Day 7: Skoura – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
The morning begins with a final walk through the palm groves of Skoura, where narrow dirt paths lead through lush gardens and traditional homes. Departing for Ouarzazate, there is an optional stop at the Atlas Film Studios for those interested in Morocco’s film industry. Crossing back through the High Atlas Mountains, scenic stops along the way provide a chance to take in the breathtaking landscapes before arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
